Students from the University of Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture in Vietnam took home 1st Prize in the 2014 Student Charrette at the 2014 Won Architecture Festival.
They were led by HCMC University Lecturer Thanh Hung Dang. Their proposal was entitled, "The Return - Storage of Natural Life".
The program for the competition had the students designed on at the Festival. This year, the theme was called "Satellite City," having students relocate an ill-planned airport to be more ideal location.
From their Project Description:
"Human nature and our city? One man is the essence of nature. The world in which we are living is nothing more than a tangible and intangible expression of what we build. The urban residents have been in a tangled puzzle in an effort to make the world and the living environment better and better. However, the results are not always as expected.
What is really happening to the cities where we are living in? Rapidly and out-of-control changes to the cities is becoming too chaotic that make people wonder themselves 'what is the original, true look of our habitat and what is that we really want?'. A good human live is a life in accordance with nature. Sometimes it is important to understand the nature of the cities where we live rather than what they were used to be in the past or how they would need to become in the future.
The civilization of human being is increasing every day and on the way towards the civilization, they have lost themselves."
"This project is to discourse on solving the problems of the city. The whole area of the airport was used as a enormous transfer station of the city. This hub is a space multi-functional and extremely flexible intermediate.
Within a large city, an ill-positioned and inefficient airport was closed an outmoded, replacing
it with a new one in more appropriate location. The old airport will transform from blight to opportunity. A spacious voids is aim to provide the city a wide range of potential options to promote city development or addressing the strong issue of our city."
"The program is a cyclical activity produced and "consumed" in the park itself, an ecosystem of cultural production and exchange. which will provide and resolve the core issues of the city. Over three phases, "the storage" will complete its cycle to return to the starting point with a higher level and continue to address these emerging issues of the city. Just like that, this loop will ensure the store is a natural life and the essence of all things life form. The mission of the tree phases will be completely different."
"Based on the current issues, the specific plan will be carried out such as installing underground metro, redistributing real estates, repositioning power lines underground,...If new problems emergesthe process can be conducted again. This strategy can be active for a very long times, probably hundreds of years to come.
But there is one issue to be noticed that most of the material used in this project is precast elements such as steel frames and concrete panel slabs. The poor expression of such materials can decrease the quality of the living environment. A big question our team faced that “whether this project will turn in to a slum or not?
Our team aimed to control this by limiting the speed of reconstructing the city. This means only 80 percent of the total capability is dwelled by people. The rest is dedicated to the natural green spaces blended within the community. The regulation assures the good standard of life during the time people live here."
"It might be estimated that a person can stay here from 10 to 15 years, enough to create a bond the environment. Therefore, the slot of entire trees are in the strategy of strengthen the connection of human and nature.
People in modern society though not pleased with their current living condition, is not also very determined in making sustainable and green environment probably because they have forgot or never knew the experience of living among nature."
"Specific into the design, we kept the main existing road to serve as the main traffic connections to adjacent areas. Then, square grids of internal roads will later be done, creating the primary units of land with the dimension of 150x150 meter. Within these primary dwelling units, there is adequate infrastructure for life to maintain and flourish.
Variety functions are set to serve people needs such as markets, playgrounds, green spaces, gardens among with schools, offices. All cars and motorbikes occupy parking buildings placed at the rear of dwelling units. This left people walking and cycling between the houses to enrich community interaction."
"Looking at the bigger picture, this strategy will work as a spinal diagram. A cycle will represent a stage of renovation. The higher the spinal goes, more problems will be solved. Not only the existing problems but this project may provide the space for the future problems that we have not yet acknowledged.
In conclusion, our project is an effort to create a long term strategy to reconstruct the entire city in hundreds of years both in the infrastructure and the connection of human and nature."
